Coexistence of the Arctic tern (Sterna paradisaea) and the inhabitants of the municipality of Ísafjörður in Iceland : conflicts and solutions

Abstract: The coexistence of residents in the Icelandic municipality of Ísafjörður and Arctic terns (Sterna paradisaea) is affected by conflict and dissatisfaction during the breeding season. Based on field observations and a survey, the causes of these conflicts and the residents' attitudes wher examined. Overall, the aggression level of the Arctic terns is low; however, some factors, such as dogs or the stage of breeding, increase the rate of attacks. For successful management, a combination of several measures is recommended.
