Abstract: Aim of this study: Within the scope of the pilot project "Kinder in Kitas (KiK)" was analyzed in how far developmental peculiarities exist in children at the age of 3 to 6 years in selected regions in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania (MWP). Topic of the analysis was to investigate on language and cognition competences in relation to the social status of families. The presumption is that children with a low social status show lesser language and cognition competences. Methods: The Dortmund Developmental Screening for the Kindergarten ("Dortmunder Entwicklungsscreening für den Kindergarten DESK 3-6") was utilized to detect developmental peculiarities in the fields of language and cognition competences. The social status of parents was interpreted in terms of education, income and occupation. The following hypothesis has been established: Children of families with a low social status show lesser language and cognition competences than children of families with a medium or high social status.
