Abstract: In the Tollense valley exists a population of Misgurnus fossilis, one of the rarest fish species in Germany, according to Appendix 2 of the FFH-guidelines. However, no information on the size of the population or its preferred habitat is given. Therefore, a representative selection of waters was fished, and habitat parameters as well as population information were collected, evaluated and compared to bibliographical references. With the help of this survey, it was found out that there exists one of the most important M. fossilis habitats in Germany between Neubrandenburg and the Neddemin weir.
